Try out this new Facebook Gimmick

Throw away your old emoticons — now you can communicate your emotions with the profile image of any page or user on Facebook.

FacebookThat means you could use Mark Zuckerberg’s face to convey some kind of emotion about being awkward or Chuck Norris’ face, if you are feeling particularly awesome. Here’s how to do it:

  • First, start chatting with someone. (Though that might be a challenge with Facebook chat.)
  • Whenever you need to dump some of your feelings into the chat, find the appropriate page or profile of someone you feel conveys that perfect emotion.
  • Grab the code at the end of the profile or page — it can be custom, like “MattLynley.” but it’s probably a string of numbers like 171108522930776
  • Paste that code into your chat surrounded by double brackets, like so: [[171108522930776]]

Boom! You just destroyed the notion that you can’t convey sarcasm or emotion over the internet. John Constine over at TechCrunch has a big list of codes that might be useful in everyday chat.

(Thanks to James Plafke of Geeko System for digging this one up.)
